Contemporary Art: Ad Diriyah Biennale launches for 2021

In another positive move towards a post-Covid recovery for arts and culture,

Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan, Minister of Culture, revealed the news in Riyadh last week.


To be held in the historic surroundings of the UNESCO-listed At-Turaif medieval city on the outskirts of Riyadh, the inaugural event will focus on contemporary art in 2021, whilst Islamic art will be the central theme in 2022. A spokesman from the Ministry of Culture said, “The biennale’s focus will alternate its themes between each yearly edition, creating a sustainable platform for Saudi artists to showcase unique works and engage with international peers. It’s also an extraordinary opportunity for visitors to experience the depth and breadth of Saudi’s cultural offering and creativity,” The biennale will be hosted and managed by the recently established Thunaiyat Ad-Diriyah Foundation.


Specific dates and details for the event will be released in the coming months.
