Diriyah Gate tells the Saudi story.
On the north-west edge of Riyadh lies the ancient capital of Diriyah. Now a UNESCO world heritage site, the historic city stands as the birth place of Saudi Arabia since its settlement in 1744. Nearly 300 years later its preservation and promotion is about to enter a new era, with the official (re)launch of Diriyah Gate on November 19th.
Such is the importance of the old city, both historically and to the future of KSA, that King Salman himself is rumored to be attending. So what can visitors expect to discover and experience from this new vision?
Already, Diriyah Gate has been the venue for major sports and entertainment events including the 2018 FormulaE race and a series of concerts around it. In the short term the inaugural Diriyah Season will take place from November 22nd to December 21st and feature a global sports, entertainment and cultural calendar. Marquee events include the Joshua-Ruiz world heavyweight boxing contest, Formula E, an ATP sanctioned Tennis tournament and "Diriyah Oasis"- a temporary entertainment zone.
Over the longer term the city will undergo significant development to create a cultural and heritage-focused destination, highlighting the architectural and artistic legacy of the area. Hotels, 8 museums (including the Saudi Museum for Modern Art) , retail areas and entrepreneurial communities will be built to create a living hub to showcase the Kingdom's history and contemporary culture. Overseen and delivered by the Diriyah Gate Development Authority, the full development is expected to be complete by the mid 2020's in line with the Kingdom's Vision 2030 project.
